Former minister Ana Abrunosa will head the parliamentary health committee, former Socialist party leader Eurico Brillante Díaz will head the labor committee and Edite Estrela will head the culture committee, a PS source told Lusa.
According to an official source from the Socialist parliamentary group, the PS, as in the previous legislature, continues to chair the Foreign Affairs Committee, and deputies Sergio Sousa Pinto and Filipe Neto Brandao in the Budget and Finance Committee.
Among the new members of the new parliamentary group is the former Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa, who is now in Parliament and will head the Health Commission, which was headed by the PSD in the previous legislature.
Former PS parliamentary leader Eurico Brillante Díaz will chair the working committee (another committee that was part of the PSD in the previous legislature), while former Vice-President of the Assembly of the Republic Edite Estrel has been given responsibility for cultural management.
The PS parliamentary group in the current legislature is led by Alexandra Leitan, elected last week on a single list with 12 vice-presidents, including former Socialist governors Mariana Vieira da Silva, António Mendonça Mendes and Marina Gonçalves.
The SDP with six, the PS with five and Chega with three share the chairpersonship of 14 specialized parliamentary committees.
Among those elected by the PSD are former PSD vice-president Salvador Malheiro from the Environment and Energy Committee and MP Paula Cardoso, a former “deputy” of the panel, from the Constitutional Affairs Committee.
Former Chamber President Óbidos Telmo Faria will chair the European Affairs Committee, MP Emilia Cerqueira will chair Agriculture and Fisheries, and Ofelia Ramos will chair the Transparency Committee, an official source in the chamber’s leadership told Lusa.
The Economic Committee will be chaired by former Vice President Miguel Santos.
Regarding the Chega presidency, MP Bruno Nunez will chair the local government committee, MP Manuela Tender (former PSD elected by Vila Real) will chair the education committee, and MP Pedro Pessanha will chair the defense committee.
At the beginning of each legislative assembly, the posts of chairmen of parliamentary committees are always allocated in proportion to the weight of each house in the group of 230 deputies, and also taking into account the structure of the current government.
The PS took over the chairmanship of the parliamentary committees on foreign affairs, budget and finance, health, labor and culture.
For the first time, the Chega, the third largest group in the Assembly of the Republic, will chair three committees including national defence, education and local government.
There are only two significant changes to note regarding the organization of the 14 standing parliamentary committees compared to what was in effect in the previous legislature. Government management now returns to the Budget and Finance Committee; and the 13th Commission, which had a long name and covered areas such as administrative modernization, is now called exclusively the Commission for Territorial Cohesion and Local Government.
This Commission on Territorial Cohesion and Local Government will include the area of public funds, which was previously the responsibility of the Parliamentary Commission on Economics.
