IL accuses government of ‘huge mess’ of IRS and will present ‘more ambitious’ proposal

The Liberal Initiative president on Tuesday accused the government of making a “huge mess” over IRS cuts and an unwillingness to set the record straight, and announced the introduction of a “much more ambitious” proposal.

The IL leader criticized the government’s option to be represented in the urgent debate requested by the PS on the IRS cuts by the parliamentary affairs minister rather than the finance minister, arguing that this “would be a great opportunity to clarify what exactly is missing clarification”, which he believes ” a lot of”.

“They got themselves into a huge mess here, and it would be useful if the Minister of Finance wanted to finally clarify the situation tomorrow. What is it really about, what are the release tools, what are the schedules,” he said.

Rui Rocha spoke to reporters while visiting the Sagalexpo exhibition dedicated to the export of Portuguese food products in Lisbon.

Pointing out that the government had indicated it was “not willing to lie” about the IRS cuts, the Liberal felt it was “not willing to elaborate,” remembering that IL raised the issue in the government program debate that took place late last week in parliament.

“I can even accept it [que o Governo não mentiu], but then they didn’t want to clarify. They had many opportunities to do this, enormous opportunities. “IL has been saying since August that these tax cuts that were in AD’s speech were very insufficient, they were very unambitious,” he said.

The IL President noted that the party would make the government’s proposal viable when it was discussed and voted on in the Assembly of the Republic, but stated that “the final meaning of the vote depends on the very substance of the proposal presented.”

Anticipating that “this will frankly not be enough”, IL will present “an ambitious alternative proposal for tax cuts, consistent with what it presented to the Portuguese in the electoral program.”

Stating that the government’s proposal to cut the IRS is “about 10 euros, and in some cases less”, Rui Rocha countered that the IL proposal brings “much more significant differences” from “60/70/100 euros” to “who earns”. 1200/1300/1500 euros per month.”

“According to our calculations, we are talking about 1,500–1,700 million real euros. In other words, we do not include in this proposal what António Costa has already done,” he pointed out.

“And we understand that there is a place and it needs to be done, because otherwise we cannot talk about a financial shock, we cannot talk about relief for the middle class, relief for families, we cannot talk about the fact that tax burden records have been broken recently. years,” he emphasized.

During this visit, Rui Rocha was also asked about former PSD MP Patricia Dantas, who was invited to take up the position of deputy at the Ministry of Finance, but decided not to take up the post after the news that she was already being accused in a lawsuit. at the stage of investigating the crime of fraud in obtaining a subsidy.

The Liberal said he didn’t want to “make too much of a difference” because he was not a government official but someone who would join a minister’s office.

Despite this, he found it “astonishing that the present AD government does not take the necessary precautions not to interfere in such matters from the outset” and accused the executive of “some imprudence.”

“I confess that I am somewhat surprised that, given that the legal problems facing the individual are known, no preliminary investigation was carried out, although the principle of innocence of people is always maintained,” he said.
