Nine bodies in advanced stages of decomposition were found in a boat drifting off the coast of Brazil. According to the Brazilian Federal Police, all indications are that the victims are African migrants from Mauritania and Mali.
According to the newspaper El PaisThe boat was found on Saturday by fishermen off the coast of the Brazilian state of Pará, 4,200 kilometers off the coast of Mauritania. After it was towed to shore, Brazilian police examined it on Monday and, thanks to documentation and items found with the bodies, were able to establish its origin.
The Federal Police and the Scientific Police of the state of Pará are currently working on forensic examinations to determine the identities of the victims, the cause of death and the time of their death. Eight bodies were found inside the boat, one of them floating nearby, suggesting they belonged to the same group.
The theory that authorities are investigating is that the victims were heading to Europe, but for some reason they had to change their route and ended up in an area with strong and dangerous currents.
