This Thursday, an inmate at the Linho prison in Sintra beat two prison guards, bringing the total number of attacks on guards at the prison to eight since the start of the year, the union said.
According to the leader of the National Union of Prison Guards (SNCGP), Frederico Morais, the attacks occurred around 5:30 pm after a prisoner, who was in the locker room taking a shower, refused to obey the order of a guard, who ordered a local resident to leave the prison by punching him in the face.
Following this first incident, reported to the head of the prison guard, the prisoner attacked a second guard, also punching him.
According to Frederico Morais, the union met with the prison director about a month ago to ask for the closure of unoccupied inmates who do not study or work at the facility “and who create problems with the guards.” 22 hours a day, “the maximum the law allows.”
The union leader told Lusa that prison director Linho had asked for more time to assess the situation but had not yet given an answer.
Frederico Morais said that since the beginning of the year there have been eight attacks on guards in the Linho prison and 14 in all prisons.
A source at the Directorate General of Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) confirmed to Lusa that there was an attack on a prison guard and an attempted attack on another.
As he explained, “when two guards used coercive means on a prisoner [a algemá-lo] He attacked one of the guards in the face with his hand and tried to attack the other one in the face as well.”
The same source said that the prisoner was immediately placed in an “isolator” (punishment cell), a disciplinary investigation was opened against him and the facts of the attack were transferred to the prosecutor’s office (MP) for the possible initiation of criminal proceedings for aggression. .
The process of being sent to security was also started, which would normally be carried out at another prison – on the mainland, for male prisoners, this measure could be carried out in the Linho security wing of Monsanto’s maximum security prison. (Lisbon) or in Pacos de Ferreira.
The source said that since the attack took place in Linho, the prisoner does not have to remain in the same prison for security purposes and could be transferred to Monsanto.
