Former centrist President Paulo Portas said this Saturday that the CDS-PP has withstood several announced deaths and now has the opportunity to “prove well, by serving competently” that the party is necessary.
The former deputy prime minister of the PSD/CDU government led by Pedro Passos Coelho left this message in a video shown to congressmen at the 31st major meeting of the centrists, which began today and ends on Sunday in Viseu.
Portas began by emphasizing that the congress meets a few weeks after the Portuguese “say they want change and change,” arguing that “without change there is no democracy.”
“We all know that when democracies stop rotating, they become a sham,” he said.
On the other hand, he continued, “by the Portuguese vote within the framework of the Democratic Alliance [coligação que juntou PSD, CDS-PP e PPM] The desire was also expressed that the voice of Christian democracy, open to liberals and conservatives, as has always been the case in this institution, should return to parliament and return to government.”

“The opportunity given to us now is to prove, through competence in the service, that the party is necessary, that the party promotes competence and is useful to the Portuguese. In an age of extremes, nothing is more necessary than conviction and moderation. In an age of demagoguery, there is nothing more useful than competent service to others,” he warned.
