Eleven Climaximo supporters will appear in court this Monday for blocking roads in Lisbon

Eleven supporters of the environmental movement Climáximo will go on trial this Monday in Lisbon for blocking Avenida Engeneiro Duarte Pacheco in December 2023, on charges of “civil disobedience” and “interruption of communications.”

Hearings for the 11 activists on trial are scheduled for Wednesday at the Justice Campus in Lisbon.

The environmentalists range in age from 20 to 58 years old and face more than one year in prison if convicted.

Climáximo activist Matilda Alvim recently told Lusa that “events of solidarity and resistance” are organized in court during trial days.

Therefore, a solidarity program is being planned that promises to engage and organize the next steps of the climate justice movement” – “April Assemblies”, said the Climáximo movement, which believes that 11 people will be convicted for fighting for life on the planet. .

“We cannot normalize the extreme violence that is the climate crisis. Drought in the Algarve, millions of people currently displaced and thousands of deaths due to the climate crisis. We know that governments and companies continue their plans of destruction. Delegate “The responsibility to end the climate crisis is the same as waiting for a dictator to end a dictatorship,” the movement warned.

The climate action program includes debates on Climaximo’s Disarmament and Peace Plans, lectures and public meetings to “develop the next steps of the movement.”
