The parliamentary leader of the Liberal Initiative this Monday named as priorities a review of legislation to reduce bureaucracy and simplify procedures, as well as an analysis to check the existence of bodies with overlapping responsibilities in the fight against corruption.
These positions were outlined by Mariana Leitão in statements to journalists after she was accepted in parliament by Justice Minister Rita Judice as part of a hearing with parties on taking anti-corruption measures within 60 days.
“The Liberal Initiative has once again presented the measures it considers a priority, and there has been an open statement from the Minister of Justice. Obviously there were no commitments yet this Monday, but the dialogue [com o Governo] will continue,” the Liberal bench leader said.
Among the measures presented by the Liberal Initiative to the holder of the judicial portfolio, Mariana Leitan highlighted the need to “eliminate bureaucracy and simplify as a way to fight corruption.”
“Unnecessary, lengthy and complex rules and procedures ultimately become fertile ground for corruption. On the other hand, we argue that there should be international competition for regulators. We want to ensure that these regulators are completely independent from political power,” he explained.
However, according to Mariana Leitão, it is necessary to “conduct an analysis of the various bodies that exist in the fight against corruption.”
“It is necessary to check whether there is any duplication of competencies or scope of the object. We have to determine whether this arsenal of organs and entities makes sense or if it might be a reduction in some way,” he said.
The president of the Liberal Initiative group also said her party had had a proposal to regulate lobbying since the previous legislature, and admitted it could reintroduce it to parliament.
Regarding the criminalization of illicit enrichment, a priority of the PSD and Cega, Mariana Leitan said that she did not go into “that level of detail” in the conversation with the Minister of Justice and only added that it was a matter “to see more in the future.” “.
In the first part of this round of hearings, which began on Friday and is taking place in the Assembly of the Republic, the Minister of Justice received PAN, SDP, PS and Chegu.
