Israel planned large-scale retaliation against Iran, but scaled back attacks under pressure from allies

Israel attacked Iran early this Friday morning in response to more than 300 drones and missiles fired at the country on April 13th. They said Israel’s original plan for retaliation against Iran included a broader attack targeting major military installations, including near the capital Tehran. three Israeli authorities cited New York Times.

According to the same source, the report said Israel decided to scale back the attack due to pressure from allies, including US President Joe Biden and the foreign ministers of Britain and Germany, to avoid a new escalation of tensions. .

“Instead of sending fighter jets into Iranian airspace, Israel fired a small number of missiles from aircraft hundreds of kilometers to its west,” said Israeli officials and two senior Western officials briefed on the attack.

Small attack drones were also sent “to confuse Iranian air defenses.”

According to the report, one missile hit an anti-aircraft battery in a strategically important part of central Iran, and the other exploded in mid-air.

The report emphasized the idea that Israel’s main intention was to demonstrate that it had developed the ability to attack Iran without entering its airspace or activating air defense batteries.
