BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua said on Tuesday that her party and the PS were carrying out a joint assessment of the dangers of a possible constitutional revision that could be proposed by right-wing parties.
At a press conference at the national headquarters of the Bloc de Esquerda (BE) in Lisbon, Mariana Mortagua said that “this was one of the issues discussed” at the meeting with the PS on Tuesday.
According to the BE coordinator, between the two parties “there is agreement and a shared appreciation of the dangers of constitutional review and of not allowing democracy to become entangled in debates about failure, about the loss of rights.”
“This assessment is collaborative. We will see how it is translated into the parliamentary space in the coming moments. In this case, the door is open for dialogue between the two parliamentary leaders so that we can evaluate and formulate both on this issue and on many others,” he added.
Before this press conference, BE met on Tuesday at the national headquarters of the PS, thus completing the series of meetings it proposed on March 12 to “open the way, the field of dialogue with parties of the left, with environmental parties.” , which oppose this right-wing government,” which also included the PCP, Livre and PAN.
“As the first conclusion of these meetings, I would highlight the desire to prevent failures, constitutional failures from the very beginning. Portugal has come a long way in establishing fundamental rights, Portugal has put itself at the forefront in Europe, in the world, guaranteeing rights, freedoms and We do not want to abandon the path that we have traveled so far,” said Mariana Mortagua.
Based on the results of these meetings, BU concludes that there is “opportunity for coordination between parliamentary directions, between political directions, between different parties to coordinate their activities, initially in opposition in parliament, but also for the future.”
This was the “first moment of dialogue” which BE hopes will open “an open channel, an opportunity for dialogue and conversation between these parties” for a “stronger opposition” to the PSD/CDS-PP minority executive.
On the other hand, according to Mariana Mortagua, there was a “desire for April 25 to be a moment of enormous popular mobilization” and a “celebration of democracy” when “the vast democratic majority takes to the streets throughout their lives.” a bunch of”.
The XXIV Constitutional Government, formed after the legislative elections on March 10, enjoys the support of 80 deputies – 78 from the SDP and 2 from the SDS-PP – out of 230 in parliament, in which the PS has 78 seats. Chega 50, Liberal Initiative 8, BE 5, PCP 4, Livre also 4 and PAN 1.
The PCP and BE presented motions in the Assembly of the Republic to reject the government program, which were rejected on April 12, with the SDP, Chega and CDS-PP voting against and the PS abstaining.
