The leader of the France Insubmissa coalition (LFI, left and radical left parties), Mathilde Panot, said on Tuesday that she had been summoned by police to give evidence as part of an investigation into an “apology for terrorism.”
“This is the first time in the history of the (French) Fifth Republic that the chairman of an opposition group in the National Assembly has been summoned for such a serious reason,” Panot said in a statement, warning “solemnly of this serious reason.” instrumentalization of the judiciary to suppress political expression.”
The investigation was launched following a statement by the LFI parliamentary group published on October 7, the day of the Islamist group Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel, described as an “armed offensive by Palestinian forces” amid the “intensification of Israel’s occupation policy” in the Palestinian territories.
