Data on the health status of the Portuguese and all European citizens will now be available to all health professionals in the European Union, reports Newspaper (JN).
The measure, voted this Wednesday in the European Parliament (EP), will come into force this year but will only apply in 2026.
By 2030, the records of more than 450 million Europeans are expected to be part of a database used for scientific research.
However, this explains JN, this data will be controlled by users. Each person decides what information they want to share with health care providers and may omit information without making it visible.
This warning may be relevant, for example, if a woman wants to have an abortion outside her country where abortion is illegal. If you request confidentiality of this information, it will not remain in the user’s records.
“If I had a depressive episode a few years ago and I don’t want the gastroenterologist to know about it, I can omit this information,” Sarah Cerdas, a member of the Socialist Party, a member of the European Parliament responsible for negotiating this regulation with the Socialists and Democrats EP, JN said.
