Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa outlined differences between Luís Montenegro, the PSD leader and current prime minister, and António Costa, the former PS secretary general who led the government until 2023.
At a dinner on Tuesday evening with foreign journalists, the head of state noted that Montenegro is “urban-rural” and Costa is “eastern”.
“He [Montenegro] This is a person who comes from a deep, urban and rural country, with a rural demeanor. This is very curious, and that is why it is difficult to understand. He is completely independent, uninfluenced and improvisational,” he said of the PSD leader, as quoted by Correio Braziliense.
Antonio Costa, “being Eastern, was slow,” he explained. “I would like to inform, control and deliver,” he added.
“Montenegro is not eastern, but slow, it has the time of a rural country, although urbanized. She reminds us of the old SDP, which was like that. The PS was Lisbon, the metropolitan areas, and the PSD was the rest of the country, especially the North and North Central region,” Marcelo described.
At the same dinner Marcelo said he broke off relations with his son because of the incident involving the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who were treated at the Santa Maria hospital.
The President of the Republic added that it is “stimulating” to work with Montenegro, since the current Prime Minister “has a rich imagination and has the logic of reasoning, like a native of a traditional country.” “This is a lot of work for me,” he admitted.
Marcelo also mentioned at the meeting with foreign journalists that Portugal “takes full responsibility” for crimes committed during slavery and the colonial era.
