The parliamentary leader of Chegi this Thursday said that the President of the Republic should retract his statements about colonialism and hoped that he did so in his April 25 speech instead of a “historical review.”
“The speech of the President of the Republic at the ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of April 20 was practically a historical review” without “special content, only historical content,” Pedro Pinto said.
The deputy spoke to reporters at the end of the solemn ceremony of celebrating the 50th anniversary on April 25 in the Assembly of the Republic.
Chegi’s parliamentary leader noted that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “did not touch on the topic he touched on yesterday”, about Portugal’s “alleged debts” “with our former colonies or with the colonial past”, indicating that the party had expected this.
Pedro Pinto said he was “very, very proud” of Portugal’s history and asked the head of state to “renounce” as he on Tuesday acknowledged Portugal’s responsibility for crimes committed during the colonial era and offered to pay reparations for past mistakes. .
“If he doesn’t do it today, he will have to abdicate to the Portuguese another time,” he said, indicating that the party would “push this issue again within the next week.”
Asked how exactly Chega would do this, Pedro Pinto replied that the request to be received by the President of the Republic “is one of the issues that is on the table.”
“There will be news about this in the coming hours, we will unite the leadership of the parliamentary group and talk about it,” he said.
In his speech at the official meeting of Parliament, President Chegui accused the President of the Republic of betraying the Portuguese by advocating the payment of reparations for colonial-era crimes, believing that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa should “love the history” of Portugal.
Despite the speech of the President of the Republic, Chega’s parliamentary leader refused to authorize Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s appeal to Chega to “always prefer democracy, even imperfect, to dictatorship.”
When asked if he believed that Marcelo Rebelo de Souza ignored Chega in his speech, he answered in the negative, stating that “of course, the President of the Republic already had a written speech from home.”
Regarding the exit of the Chegi deputies from the meeting room, while deputies from the PS, BE, PCP, Livre benches and the PAN parliamentarian sang “Grândola, Vila Morena,” one of the signature songs of the April Revolution, Pedro Pinto explained that “the ceremonial session ends with the national anthem.”
“The anthem sounded, Chegi deputies left the hall. Absolutely normal, we always do this,” he said.
Pedro Pinto also said that Chega will not participate in the traditional parade on Avenida da Liberdade, but will be present at the ceremony, which will take place at the Belém Cultural Center, as well as at the dinner at the Palacio da Ajuda.
