“April 25 should be the date of unity, the ceremony here in the Assembly of the Republic represents this union of democracy and the regime in which we live. This is the regime, fortunately, in which we live and in which on April 25, whoever wants another regime is not there,” defended PS parliamentary leader Alexandra Leitan in statements to journalists at the end of the solemn meeting dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.
According to the socialist, it was in this spirit that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa gave a speech on “a historical journey, analytical over these 50 years, addressing personalities of different political origins.”
“And in this sense, it was a speech of unity over these 50 years,” he said.
Alexandra Leitan highlighted the phrase of the President of the Republic in this speech: “No matter how imperfect it is, democracy is always better than any dictatorship.”
“That’s the phrase we have to take from here. Today is not the day to say what is wrong with our democracy – some things are wrong – but any democracy is always better than dictatorship, freedom is always better than oppression, and solidarity is always better than dictatorship. division,” he emphasized.
According to the deputy and leader of the socialists, “democracy is something that is built every day.”
The parliamentary leader of the PS said that “it is always a great joy to celebrate April 25, this first day of democracy, equality and freedom,” given that these 50 years of democracy have been successful.
The President of the Republic today defended the choice of democracy, however imperfect, against dictatorship, arguing that the strongest societies are democracies and remembering that until April 25 there was no half-cycle of popular choice.
