The President of the Republic this Friday considered that the April 25 parade on Avenida da Liberdade showed that the population is attentive to the defense of democracy and called on young people to be more politically active.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke to high school and university students at the former royal arena, next to the Belém Palace in Lisbon, during a debate class on April 25 that included General António Ramalho Eanes, the first democratically elected President of the Republic.
Referring to Thursday’s parade on Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon to mark the 50th anniversary of April 25, the head of state said: “This is a form of political demonstration. She says: we want intact freedom and democracy, and we want better.” democracy, and we want more freedom, and we make sure that no one undermines our freedom and our democracy.”
“This is your role today,” defended Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, addressing young people.
The head of state called on today’s youth to act together: “Determine where you should act, where it is most useful for you to act, and do it together, not individually.”
“Find others with whom you can work together and work for change, some to the right, some to the left, some higher, some lower, but work for change,” he urged.
The President of the Republic pointed to housing, education and culture as possible areas in which young people could act for change, and told them that “everything is politics” and that “every one of them is political.”
“Demand more power, act more, be more present,” he asked.
“On April 25, young people aged 20 and 30 committed the crime. There is no need for a new revolution now, but we need more young people in their 20s and 30s, and even earlier, to become politically involved so that we don’t leave a void, so that we don’t have to complain about the voids they leave,” he said.
