All areas of the Serra da Estrela central massif have reopened.

Access to the central massif of the Serra da Estrela became passable again this Sunday along all its arteries, a civil defense source told Lusa.

According to the subregional command for emergencies and civil protection of Beiras and Serra da Estrela, sections 11 (Piornos Torre), 12 (Torre Torre) and 13 (Torre Lagoa Comprida) were reopened around 8:00.

All three areas were closed to traffic from 5pm on Friday due to snowfall.

Sections 1 and 2 of the Serra da Estrela central massif were already open to traffic on Saturday afternoon.

The areas of Bragança, Viseu, Vila Real, Braga, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Guarda and Castelo Branco were under a yellow warning until 9:00 am on Saturday due to snowfall forecasts, the Institute of Portugues do Mar and the Atmosphere said (IPMA).

The IPMA has warned of snowfall forecasts of more than 1,100 or 1,200 metres, depending on the area, and also predicts snow accumulations will range from five to 10 centimetres.
