On Tuesday, the PS said that the dismissal of Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisbon Ombudsman Ana Jorge has the sole purpose of installing “people who are more politically minded and tamed” by the PSD government.
“The government is creating a series of affairs, the only basis of which is the replacement by the PSD government of people who are more politically minded and more domesticated,” said the vice-president of the PS parliamentary group, Thiago Barbosa Ribeiro, in a statement to journalists at the socialists’ headquarters in Porto.
The Socialist MP said: “That is what is at stake in these and other respects, as has been the case with the NHS executive.”
According to Thiago Barbosa Ribeiro, the government of Luis Montenegro, since taking office, “suddenly discovered problems that had not been identified” in a group of leaders who are “undoubtedly good leaders and good public managers.”
These problems seem to have more to do with their party affiliation than with their technical competence in running institutions, he stressed.
The socialist therefore described the decision to fire the Santa Casa da Miseriórdia provider as “profoundly radical, unusual and disturbing.”
In her opinion, this decision is unusual, since Ana Jorge was in power for only a year and in her hands was the process of restructuring and financial rebalancing of the institution, so “nothing could have predicted a decision of this kind.”
Thiago Barbosa Ribeiro considered this dismissal “deeply radical”, since the government finds a number of false arguments for dismissing at one time or another the entire management of Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
And it is also worrying because it reveals a pattern of action by the government led by Luis Montenegro, which finds a number of excuses for the “untimely” replacement of a number of leaders in various public institutions, “seeking to tame them and put people in their place.” there are political solidarity with the government,” he emphasized.
The vice-president of the PS parliamentary group said that on Monday the party submitted a request to the Assembly of the Republic to urgently hear the now former supplier of Santa Casa da Miseriórdia and the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security.
On Monday, the government announced that it had “immediately” dismissed the administration of Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisbon.
On Tuesday, director Luisa Montenegro accused acquitted provider Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa and board members of “serious negligent acts” that influenced the management of the institution, thereby justifying the dismissal.
According to the order published on Tuesday in the newspaper Diário da República (DR), which in the case of Ana Jorge was signed by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security Maria do Rosario Ramalho, the entire current SCML management team will cease their duties on Tuesday.
Ana Jorge took office on May 2, 2023, chosen by the previous socialist government of António Costa, and inherited an institution in serious financial difficulties after years of the pandemic and the process of internationalization of social games carried out by the administration of the provider Edmundo. Martinho, which could have caused losses of around 50 million euros.
