Navy rescues man who suffered heart attack on board ship off Sines island

An American man who suffered a heart attack was rescued by the Portuguese navy while he was on board a ship about 33 miles (equivalent to 61 kilometers) from the port of Sines.

On Monday evening, the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Center received information that a passenger on the shipMSC ORCHESTRA’ suffered a heart attack. “The Mar Center for Emergency Patient Assistance (CODU-MAR) was immediately contacted and classified the situation as a medical emergency,” the Navy said in a statement.

A ship from the rescue station was called out early Tuesday morning and rescued the 65-year-old crew member.

The elderly man was taken to the Sines marina, where INEM was waiting for him. The passenger was treated at the scene and taken to hospital.
