The government will extend the deadline for forest owners and producers to clear forests and lands by another month. The deadline, which ended on April 30, was extended until May 31, as stated in a joint order by the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries on Tuesday.
The extension is due to “precipitation recorded in recent months and high soil water content, which has impacted many fuel handling operations and contributed to the rapid growth of vegetation in already developed areas,” the statement said.
Weather forecasts indicate that in May there will be adequate conditions for safe deforestation.
