The PSD will request an urgent hearing from former Finance Minister Fernando Medina on charges that after the legislative elections he allegedly authorized an increase in spending of approximately one billion without allocating a budget, the leader of the Social Democratic Party said this Thursday.
Speaking to journalists in parliament, Hugo Soares said that the current finance minister, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, said this Thursday that the previous chief executive, after the legislative elections of March 10, authorized a series of expenditures of “the order of a thousand million euros.” , some of them without budgetary allocations.”
According to the parliamentary leader of the SDP, “this is a huge disloyalty and negligence that calls into question what was expected of the health of public finances.”
“I believe that a government that, after the elections, authorizes spending of about one billion euros, most of which is not appropriate, can only be accused of an irresponsible and completely negligent government that wants to mortgage the future of those who should legitimately control the destinies of Portugal,” – he accused.
For this reason, continued Hugo Soares, the parliamentary group decided to request an urgent hearing from the previous Minister of Finance and current Deputy PS Fernando Medina, “so that he can come and give clarification on this situation.”
“I hope he agrees,” added Hugo Soares.
This Thursday, the Finance Minister estimated the deficit recorded until the end of the first quarter of this year at approximately 600 million euros and accused the previous government of increasing spending after the last legislative elections.
“The fiscal situation is much worse than what the previous government announced,” said Joaquim Miranda Sarmento at the end of the Council of Ministers meeting, saying that it was important to add another 300 million euros to the 300 million euro deficit recorded in the last budget performance report as a result of increasing debts to suppliers.
According to the head of the finance department, part of the increase in spending occurred after the early legislative elections on March 10.
