André Ventura announced that during the parliamentary debate this Thursday, Chega will make the PS proposal to end the tariffs on the former SCUT viable, despite accusing the Socialist Party of hypocrisy. Ventura indicated that he had not reached an agreement with the government to gradually reduce tolls.
“Chega will ensure the immediate descent and immediate cessation of toll collection on the former SCUT highway, since we understand that a proposal that is too gradual and without commitment could undermine the expectations of the Portuguese, who believe that they are truly getting relief from the tolls,” Ventura announced.
The party would not have a “clear conscience” if it opposed a measure that “reduces and ends toll fees in Portugal,” the leader said.
“During the election campaign, Chega clearly and unequivocally defended the abolition of all tolls. I actually said that this was one of the boldest proposals. That was the commitment we made to gradually push for the removal of all tolls,” he said. .
Ventura stressed that Chega sought to reach a consensus with the government on a schedule for reducing tolls, and not immediately, as the PS proposed, but it was not possible to reach an agreement.
If the vote is in favor of Chegi, the PS proposal will receive enough votes to be approved overall.
