Hearings of the executive director of the SNS and the minister were approved unanimously

This Thursday, the parliamentary health committee approved a hearing of the chief executive of the National Health Service (SNS) and the minister Ana Paula Martins to clarify the circumstances of the dismissal of Fernando Araujo, announced last week.

The hearing of Fernando Araujo and Ana Paula Martins, unanimously approved at the committee meeting this Thursday, was requested by the Socialist bench through a request submitted the day after the announcement of the dismissal of the SNS executive director.

On April 23, Fernando Araujo announced his resignation from the leadership of the executive council (DE-SNS) along with his team, saying that he does not want to be an obstacle to the government in the policies and measures that he considers necessary to implement.

In a statement released at the time, the doctor said the DE-SNS is “a technical body, a public institution of the state, which must stand above political issues or party programs and which implements public policies” determined by the government.

In requesting a hearing, the Socialist parliamentary group considered it “important to know and understand the specific reasons that led to the dismissal of Fernando Araujo and what this means for the government’s intentions regarding the ongoing reform” at SNS.

The Executive Directorate began operations on January 1, 2023, in accordance with the new National Health Service (NHS) Regulations proposed by then Minister Marta Temido, with the aim of coordinating the response to care of all units of the SNS and modernizing its management.

Fernando Araujo said that in the “first and only meeting” with the Ministry of Health, DE-SNS communicated its readiness to continue its work to complete the ongoing reform, but also to place itself “at the disposal of the Ministry of Health.” a new government team if it understands how to change the policies and the face of the system.”

He also demanded that the dismissal of the executive management take effect the day after the submission of a department-required performance report, which he said was “learned via ‘e-mail’ at the same time as its publication in the media.”

A day later, on April 24, the ministry announced that Ana Paula Martins had accepted the resignation of Fernando Araújo and indicated that “in due time the decision of the executive leadership will be known” with the aim of implementing reforms that will allow “turning the page on the protection of social networks.”

In a statement, the Department of Health warned that “reality reveals every day a very difficult situation” with access to health care and “with the management of human and financial resources in the NHS.”

The office of Ana Paula Martins also said that the termination of the group’s mandate will be carried out after submitting a report on the activities and status of the executive management of SNS within 60 days.
