PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos agreed this Saturday to the hearing of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) in Parliament, as has happened in the past, but “not on specific cases.”
At the end of the meeting of the National Commission of the PS, which took place in Lisbon, journalists questioned Pedro Nuno Santos on whether the PGR should be considered in Parliament, after the President of the Assembly of the Republic said that Lucília Gago should give explanations to deputies about the processes that provoked the political crises.
“Yes. This is provided for. Not for specific cases, but for the work carried out by the prosecutor’s office,” he said.
Regarding the position on this issue defended the day before by former Prime Minister António Costa, the PS leader refused to speak on behalf of his former Secretary General, but stated that, in his words, “he should not be heard on specific cases, but on specific cases” . within the competence of Parliament.”
“Parliament has already heard several times the opinions of different prosecutors general of the republic on actions and priorities in matters of criminal investigation. This should be done very well in parliament,” he recalled.
Speaking to CNN Portugal on Friday, António Costa said there was “no point” in holding a discussion about Operation Influential Man in the Assembly of the Republic.
“I would make a distinction. Firstly, about the activities of the prosecutor’s office, which must provide information. I believe that the law already provides for an annual report that is presented to the Assembly of the Republic and the Assembly of the Republic is the one where you decide how much you value it,” he said.
According to Costa, “whether the Assembly of the Republic discusses the report in detail or in shallow detail, listening to the Attorney General or not listening to the Attorney General, is a matter within the competence of the Assembly of the Republic.”
“Secondly, with regard to the specific processes that are taking place, I think that the right place for assessment is the courts, and it is in the courts that they should be assessed, and not in a political entity,” he also said.
When this idea was defended by Aguiar-Branco on the eve of April 25, BE, PCP, Livre and PAN agreed with this PGR hearing in Parliament on the role of the Ministry of State, insisting on the need for explanations, a hypothesis that Chega considered inappropriate.
