The death toll from two hurricanes that hit the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul rose to 39 since Monday, with 68 people still missing, authorities said.
“Unfortunately, due to meteorological phenomena in the RS, 39 people have already died and 68 are missing. [Rio Grande do Sul]”, state governor Eduardo Leite said in a post on the social network X.
Security forces rescued eight thousand people, and another 24 thousand were forced to flee their homes as a result of floods, which have already affected 265 municipalities out of 497 that make up the state.
State Governor Eduardo Leite said more than 2,000 state security forces and at least 1,000 more military personnel were deployed and were “working tirelessly for the rescue.”
Local authorities have issued a warning for Porto Alegre, the state capital, and the capital region, which could be exposed to large amounts of water from Lake Guaiba in the coming hours.
Unlike the storm that hit the state in 2023, when rain was concentrated in just a few areas, this time it affected the entire area, becoming the “biggest disaster” the region has ever faced.
The central government recognized the state of emergency imposed by local authorities.
