The head of the PS list from the Europeans, Marta Temido, said this Sunday that she could not “debate with all” the other candidates due to the “short calendar” before the elections, indicating her willingness to find other formats.
“We can’t have debates with everyone in the time we have between now and the elections, and obviously that’s a problem, but we can have other formats, and we’re ready to discuss them,” he stressed.
Marta Temido, who spoke to journalists as part of a visit to the agricultural fair in Ovibeje, was asked about criticism of the refusal of the PS and the Democratic Alliance (AA) to participate in the model of debates on European women proposed by television. .
Given that there is a “short calendar” before the June 9 elections, the Socialist candidate admitted that “it would be desirable to have debates with everyone,” but recalled that there is “about a month left” before the European elections.
“We think it would make more sense for us to try to balance the schedule of being on television, where we have a lot of people following us, with direct contact with people, where we can also reach each person directly,” he stressed.
The head of the PS list for Europeans said the Portuguese were “complaining about their distance from politics” but warned that this grievance “has nothing to do with television politics, the politics of spectacle and the politics of commentators.”
Voters complain that there is no “policy to listen to others, and for this we also need time,” he emphasized, noting that the PS has made a counter-proposal and is now awaiting a decision from the media and the leadership of the election campaign.
When asked about her favorite model, Marta Temido replied that she did not have one, but noted that there were “several hypotheses.”
“The debate that we all participate in is also a form of debate that requires less time, but we can multiply these debates to ensure that counter-arguments are put forward more often so that people become more informed,” he emphasized.
Another possibility would be a debate only with candidates from those political forces represented in the European Parliament, but this would “exclude parties,” which is also “undesirable,” he stressed.
According to the newspaper Expresso, the PS and AD abandoned the debate model proposed by the RTP, TVI and SIC for the European elections on June 9, in which 28 face-to-face meetings were planned between the leaders of the party lists with representation in parliament. Assembly of the Republic.
These political forces stated that there were a large number of duels that could affect the election campaign, and admitted that they agreed to a lighter calendar.
On Saturday, following a meeting of the PS National Commission, Socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos said his party should “campaign in the streets, in the territory, with the people” and not spend “all the time debating and debating.” Comments.”
The head of the PCP list for the European elections, João Oliveira, has already accused the PS and AD of not wanting to “be exposed to scrutiny” in televised debates, arguing that refusal harms the mobilization of the electorate for the elections.
The head of the BE list for the European elections, Katharina Martins, accused the PS and PSD of wanting to hide their candidates because they rejected the proposed debate model and insisted on holding them face to face.
In turn, IL leader Rui Rocha noted that these two are responsible for “an attack on democracy” because they are “trying to prevent” the holding of debates on the European elections with all parties.
