Prison guards have been monitoring a prisoner with mental health problems in shifts at the Julio de Matos hospital in Lisbon for about two months. The complaint was filed in CM by the National Union of Prison Guards, a day after identifying two other cases in which prisoners were monitored in civilian hospitals for two weeks by members of the Prison Service Intervention Team due to the refusal of the Caxias prison hospital to admit new patients.
“We have now become aware of the case of a prisoner who was in the Julio de Matos psychiatric hospital for about two months, again because he was refused admission to the psychiatric ward of the Cacxias prison hospital,” he explained CM Frederico Morais, union representative.
