Killing of three foreign surfers raises alarm in Mexico and international community

Jack Carter Road, Callum Robinson and Jake Robinson were recently in Mexico when they were reported missing.

They arrived in Mexico from the United States on April 26. After 36 hours, not a trace remained of them. The bodies were found eight days later in the well.

The crime put Mexicans on alert, and the United States warned tourists wishing to travel to Mexico.

It was a photograph showing two cars, sea waves and surfboards that 30-year-old Callum Robinson shared the beginning of the journey with his followers. “It begins…” reads a social media image of the former lacrosse player.

He lived in San Diego, where his brother Jake from Australia visited him. The two young men were from Perth, on the west coast of Australia.

They always shared a lot of photos of their trips on social networks, including a trip to Mexico with American Jack Carter Road.

With the dog, enjoying beer, with the radio, in the jacuzzi and contemplating the sea. The huge sea that surfers loved is the latest photo posted on Callum’s Instagram.

Due to the lack of news from the young people, the Australians’ friends became alarmed. That night they did not arrive at the premises where they were supposed to spend the night, which increased the anxiety. A missing person’s report was made on April 30 in the state of Baja California. But the next day, after Callum and Jake’s mother posted on Facebook, the case took on a wider scope.

The exchange of information in the group of more than 120 thousand members received media coverage, and the news was quickly spread in the North American and Australian press. Mexican authorities were forced to act quickly.

On May 2, a camp was discovered in a popular spot among surfers where the victims were to be found. In a place deserted and without telephone connections, the tents of young people were burned.

“Irons, bullets, water bottles, blood stains and drag marks were found on the burnt tents,” says local prosecutor Elena Andrade. From that moment on, authorities suspected that the tourists had been brutally attacked.

The omen was confirmed the next day when three bodies were found in a deep well six kilometers from the camp.

The prosecutor says that finding this place was like “finding a needle in a haystack.” The operations to remove the bodies from the 15-meter-deep well took several hours. The bodies were identified on Sunday.

Authorities believe the robbery went wrong

Local prosecutors believe the death was the result of a robbery that ended in execution, El País reported. The robbers found the surfers at the camp, where they tried to steal things.

“When they saw a white pickup truck, the victims’ car, they went to the scene to try to steal the car. The surfers were surprised and resisted,” explains the prosecutor, quoted by the Spanish newspaper.

Experts say Mexican authorities believe the attackers shot dead one of the youths protesting the attack, while the others came to their colleague’s defense. “When they saw that the situation was getting out of control, they disposed of the bodies,” they add.

Three suspects have been detained so far. The main one, Jesus Gerardo, has a criminal record. The other two are Gerardo’s brother and girlfriend. The woman was found to have a mobile phone of one of the victims.
