Socialist Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos said this Thursday that he is grateful that the PSD has recognized “after 20 years” the importance of the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly, expressing satisfaction with the approval of the measure.
Pedro Nuno Santos used the final stretch of his speech at the presentation of the PS’s election manifesto for the European elections to refer to today’s approval in the Council of Ministers of an increase in the CSI benchmark value by €50 and the exclusion of children’s income as an exclusion factor.
“We are grateful that finally, after 20 years, the SDP has realized the importance of the Solidarity Supplement for older people,” he said.
The CSI, according to the PS leader, “is one of the most important measures taken in Portugal to combat old-age poverty.”
“It was accepted by the PS government, the PS ministers, the PS prime minister, and the SDP voted against it. They finally understood and fortunately,” he said.
According to the secretary general, this measure “was neither in the election program of the AD” nor in the government program, “but it was approved today by the Council of Ministers, and the socialists are happy with it.”
Pedro Nuno Santos began by mentioning that “today the third of the five” measures that he announced in parliament during the discussion of the government program was approved.
“It is no longer for us because the government was way ahead of our schedule. There is no harm in it,” he said.
