PSD MP calls on Parliament to consider Ponta Delgada hospital as “the central problem in the country”

PSD deputy Paulo Moniz this Thursday called on the parties to consider the Ponta Delgada hospital, damaged by fire on Saturday, as “the central problem in the country,” stressing the need to take quick action.

“Now is the time to do two very important things. Ask this chamber and all forces to speed up, unite, unite for a quick solution to a problem that will require quick action,” said the Social Democratic parliamentarian elected from the Azores.

In a debate on the state of the National Health Service initiated by the PSD, Paulo Moniz believed that the “second dimension” involved considering the current situation in the largest hospital in the Azores as “the central problem of the country.”

According to Paulo Moniz, it is a hospital that provides support 2,000 kilometers from the Portuguese mainland, “often those who cross the Atlantic Ocean, it is of fundamental and unique importance for the population of the island of São Miguel, which at the moment. There is an induced fear of the emergence problems and lack of necessary medical care.

“This is a call, this is the help that I ask from this chamber,” said a deputy from the SDP, emphasizing that the fire that broke out on Saturday was a “dramatic situation” that was resolved “largely thanks to the prompt intervention of firefighters, security forces, military personnel and volunteers.”

The fire, which broke out at the Ponta Delgada hospital, the only public hospital on the island of Sao de Miguel, at 9:40 local time on Saturday (10:40 in Lisbon) and was declared extinguished only at 16:11. , forced the transfer of all hospitalized patients.

At the time of the fire, there were 333 patients in the medical facility, 240 had to be transferred.

The government of the Azores declared a state of public disaster on Sunday due to the fire in order to “accelerate procedures” that will allow the activities of the largest Azorean health facility to be normalized in a “short period of time.”

A report on the damage from the fire has not yet been released.
