Callum Robison, a 33-year-old Australian, was living in San Diego, California, where he welcomed his brother Jake Robinson, 30, and his American friend Jack Carter Road, also 30. All three planned to go surfing in Mexico, where they arrived on April 26.
When they arrived in Mexico, Callum posted a photo on the social network Instagram with the description “It all starts like this…”, the young man shared several photos from the trip, the last one was published on the 27th.
Two brothers, Callum and Jake, and their American friend Jack camped in Santo Tomas, Ensenada, where they were last seen on April 27, a day after arriving in Mexico.
The surfers did not arrive at the accommodation they had booked and there were no further signs of life from the three, prompting a friend to file a missing person’s report in Baja California on April 30.
The Australians’ mother, Debra Robinson, published a post on the social network Facebook asking people to help her find the children, thanks to which the case gained fame.
On May 2, the surfers’ camp was discovered, but the only belongings of the young people that authorities found were burnt tents.
Bullets, blood stains and signs of violence were also found at the scene, according to Baja California Attorney General Elena Andrade, suggesting it was a violent scene.
The bodies were found on May 3, six days after they disappeared, in a 15-metre deep well.
Investigation
Authorities suspect the young men’s murder was a botched robbery attempt. “When they saw a white pickup truck, the victim’s car, they went to the scene to try to steal the car. The surfers were surprised and resisted,” the prosecutor explained to the newspaper. El Pais.
According to this publication, authorities believe that one of the young men was shot for trying to stop the robbery, and his friends tried to protect him. The attackers “when they saw that the situation was out of control, they disposed of the bodies.”
Suspects
Three Mexican citizens were arrested. Jesus Gerardo, known as “El Quecas”, has a criminal history ranging from domestic violence to car theft and drug trafficking. The other two suspects are Gerardo’s brother and his girlfriend, who was found with the cell phones of one of the victims.
The girlfriend of the main suspect, “El Kecasa”, told the court that the man confessed to killing three surfers and stealing their car tires.
