Sporting will visit Estoril Praia this Saturday as part of the 33rd round of the I Football League. This will be the first game to celebrate the new champions after winning the title and taking into account the two records.
The Lions had clinched the title in the previous round with a win over Portimonense and benefited from Benfica’s defeat to Famalicao and will take to the field for the first time having already secured their status as champions.
With 84 points, Ruben Amorim’s side are also aiming to break the club’s league points record of 86, achieved in 2015/16 under Jorge Jesus.
If they win their two remaining games, Sporting could finish the season with 90 points, their second-best ever, just behind the 91 achieved by Sergio Conceição’s Porto in 2021/22.
In addition, Leonin can set a new maximum number of victories in the main division if it reaches 28th place in one of the last two matches of the tournament. In the previous round against Famalicao, the team led by Amorim repeated the record of 27 points achieved in the 2015/16 season with Jesus and in the 2021/22 season with the current coach.
Ahead of them will be Estoril Praia, who are five points ahead of Portimonense, in 16th place and in contention for the knockout stages, and who can thus guarantee their continuation in the top flight this round.
Also this Saturday, Sporting Braga, fourth with 65 points and one behind Porto, will meet Vitória de Guimarães, five points behind Braga, in an important battle for third place.
Arsenal will be looking to maintain ground against Porto when they host Boavista on Sunday as the two teams face each other in the final round of the league in Braga.
In the fight to save, Portimonense hosts the calm Rio Ave, while Estrela da Amadora visits the already relegated Visela.
The Tricolors enter the match in 15th place, first in the direct rescue zone, with 30 points, but only two more than Portimonense. With Desportivo de Chaves joining Visela in this round as part of the relegated teams, the battle at the bottom of the table will be to “get through” the knockout stages.
