Thousands of people demonstrate in Lisbon in defense of Palestine and against genocide

This Saturday, thousands of people demonstrated in Lisbon in defense of Palestine and against “Israeli aggression” in a march that started in front of the José Saramago Foundation and ended in Martim Moniz.

The initiative, launched by the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation, the Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and for Peace in the Middle East, among other associations, was attended by PCP Secretary General Paulo Raimundo, Leader of Parliament. from BE Fabian Figueiredo and PAN leader Ines Souza Real.

The three political leaders unanimously condemned what they consider “Israeli aggression”, denounced the “crime of genocide” committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip and said Portugal must recognize the State of Palestine.

The protesters chanted several slogans such as “Peace is a right, without it nothing can be done,” “Peace yes, war no,” and “Palestine will win.”

A large Palestinian flag opened the parade, which started somewhat late from the scheduled time of 3 p.m.

The war erupted on October 7 when Hamas commandos infiltrating the Gaza Strip carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel, killing more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP report based on official Israeli figures.

According to the Israeli army, more than 250 people were kidnapped and 128 remain captive in the Gaza Strip, 36 of whom were killed.

Israel responded by vowing to “destroy” Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, and free the hostages, launching an offensive that has already killed 34,971 people, according to the Islamist movement’s health ministry.
