Livre has approved a working group on primaries and wants to hold a referendum on regionalization in 2026

This Sunday, the 14th Livre Congress approved 21 of the 25 concrete proposals submitted to congressmen, including the creation of a working group to improve the primary process and a national referendum on regionalization in 2026.

The results of the specific proposals were announced this morning at the 14th Free Congress, which ends this Sunday at the municipal pavilion of Costa de Caparica, Setubal district, and out of 25 proposals, only four were rejected.

Among the approved texts is a proposal to create a working group on the internal process of primaries, following the controversy that arose due to the choice of the head of the European list, Francisco Pauperio.

“Having as our main motivation the constant search for a system that is most suitable for our vision of the world and politics, we propose the creation of a working group for an in-depth analysis of the processes of previous LIVRE primaries, similar processes in other European parties, as well as using the most up-to-date scientific literature on on this issue in order to prepare a new study of the primaries in Livre, which will serve as the basis for discussion of this topic within the party,” the text says.

Another of the approved proposals, whose supporters include deputy Jorge Pinto, requires Livre to defend a national referendum on regionalization in 2026 in the Assembly of the Republic.

“The creation of a democratic regional authority on the Portuguese mainland will certainly contribute to the renewal of the Portuguese democratic system, making it more flexible and autonomous to the detriment of the current centralization and hierarchy, creating an intermediate level of political decision-making closer to the territory. and the population, which horizontalizes and mediates the relationship between the central government and the local government,” the text says.

One of the proposals approved and most discussed on the first day of the main meeting focused on youth and was called “Ways to Strengthen Active Youth Participation.”

The text advocates the creation of a thematic circle “Youth and Youth Policy”, which will focus specifically on youth problems with the aim of developing a “youth policy”, and calls on the next party leadership, elected this Sunday, to develop a National Youth Strategy.

The debate on the first day included those who defended the need for these thematic circles, warning that the far right is “in schools every day”, urging the younger generation to vote, and other activists who considered them unnecessary for discussing politics. with an impact on young people.

There is no youth party in the Livre, and the various members who have taken the pulpit have expressed no desire to create one, rejecting “a pool for the big and another for the little.”

A proposal called “National Priority: Investing in Public and Co-op Housing” also received the green light, which argues that access to affordable housing “requires continued major investment over the coming decades in public and co-op housing to increase non-speculative housing stock.” .

Supporters invite Livre to discuss measures in this area with the rest of the parties in Parliament, namely “ways in which the private sector can participate in the promotion of affordable housing through attractive financial mechanisms” and propose a “more ambitious program of housing cooperatives.” “

Congress also approved text that advocates for “full equality” in the party by strengthening “internal accessibility and inclusion efforts that eliminate forms of ableism and gender inequality.”

Sports as “a space for cooperation, inclusion, equality and freedom”, combating hate speech, “more ecology in the political actions of the Livre” or the creation of programs to support journalistic activities are also among the approved topics.
