Opinion polls give the Socialists a victory without a majority in Catalonia. Independents can stay out of government

The Socialists won this Sunday’s elections in Catalonia, but they did not have enough deputies to govern the country alone, according to several opinion polls, which also do not take for granted the absolute majority that the independence parties have had in the region for 14 years .

In Catalonia, in the north-east of Spain, autonomous elections took place this Sunday, and polls published on television and other media after the polls closed place between 37 and 40 deputies for the Socialist Party of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, while for the absolute a majority requires 68 deputies.

According to polls published by the public, the three independent parties, which have held a majority in parliament for 14 years and unite to ensure independent governments are always viable even if none receives a majority of votes, will win between 58 and 74 MPs. television channels TVE and TV3 and the newspaper El Periodico de Catalunya.
