European minimum wage and European unemployment benefit supplement: the most ambitious proposals of the parties

The electoral programs for the European elections have already begun to take shape. Employment, housing and immigration are at the center of the parties’ most ambitious proposals.

The PS, winner of the 2019 European elections, is proposing to create a European unemployment benefit supplement and abolish unpaid internships throughout the European Union (EU). The Socialist candidate also defends a European affordable housing plan aimed at those most in need, young people and the middle class.

The Democratic Alliance (AD) intends to create a single defense market, make European funds conditional on respect for the rule of law and make the right to housing autonomous in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Another proposal from the right-wing coalition is to provide European citizens over 65 with preferential access cards to cultural and sporting events, as well as public and transport services.

The Liberal Initiative seeks to elect members of the European Parliament for the first time. In Brussels, the party promises to fight to promote financial competition between countries and regions, revise the common agricultural policy and create a single energy market.

The left bloc proposes to criminalize the use of offshore companies by European citizens and companies, cancel border externalization agreements and impose economic sanctions on Israel over the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The CDU undertakes to prepare Portugal’s exit from the single European currency, reject Primacy of EU law over national legislation and prepare Pact for Social Progress and Employment. The plan’s objectives include reducing working hours without loss of wages.

Livre advocates a guarantee of a new European minimum wage calculated for each EU member state, a cap on European funding for tourism and local accommodation projects in areas with high tourist pressure and the creation of a European network of student accommodation.

Chega, PAN and ADN have not yet presented their programs for the European elections on June 9.
