Eurogroup President Pascal Donohoe stressed this Monday the “very stable and good state” of Portugal’s finances, hoping for “excellent cooperation” with the new Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, who will “make his debut” in Brussels today.
“I hope that we will continue to maintain excellent cooperation with the new Portuguese government and the new Minister of Finance, with whom I look forward to meeting in person today. I know that, generally speaking, Portugal’s finances remain very stable and in good shape. , but I also know that the new Chancellor of the Exchequer will have his own plans for how he intends to strengthen them further, but I foresee excellent cooperation,” said Paschal Donohoe.
Speaking on arrival at the Eurogroup meeting in Brussels, the “debut” of the Portuguese finance minister, the official declined to comment on recent statements by Joaquim Miranda Sarmento regarding the deficit and debt left by the previous socialist government: “I leave it to the debate that is taking place in Portugal.”
