An instructor pilot accused of two murders, one of which was the killing of an 8-year-old girl, during an emergency landing on Sao Joao da Caparica beach in August 2017, was acquitted on Tuesday.
“The only solution was to land on the beaches of São João,” the judge stressed, reading out the ruling, which also cleared Carlos Conde de Almeida of the crime of dangerous air transport. In addition, he said, the instructor pilot “followed the necessary safety procedures” and “did everything” to avoid a tragic outcome. The court ensures that “the decision did not forget the death of two innocent people” and recognizes that this is a “catastrophic event.”
Carlos Conde de Almeida’s lawyer says “justice has been done.” The victims’ families were shocked.
The Almada court concluded that there was no viable option other than landing on the sand – it was impossible to return to Cascais airfield, throw into a ditch or make an emergency landing at Cova do Vapor.
