“Fans of Franco and Mussolini”: Socialist candidate for the European Commission rejects agreements with the far right

The Socialist and Democratic candidate for the presidency of the European Commission, Nicolas Schmit, rejected an agreement with the far right after the European elections in an interview given euronews in this Wednesday. “It is impossible to reach any kind of understanding, agreement or anything else with the far right,” he said.

The Luxembourg politician does not see significant differences between the two most right-wing parties in the European Parliament – Conservatives and Reformists and Identity and Democracy. “The European People’s Party makes a special distinction between the decent far right and the parasitic far right. But when I look at decent far-right people, who do I see? Fans of Franco and Mussolini,” he shot.

Socialists and Democrats are proposing to reconsider the European Pact on Migration and Asylum and condemn the “handing over of huge sums of money” to autocratic regimes, but they are not counting on the votes of conservatives and reformists and Identity and Democracy. “It is impossible to reach an agreement just to buy votes, because the far right is smart and will not give up votes just like that. They will ask to intervene in the conduct of European politics,” said Nicolas Schmit.

When asked about the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the candidate replied:for a much tougher approach” towards Israel and against “excluding the path to a political solution and ceasefire.”

European elections will take place from 6 to 9 June in all 27 EU member states. In Portugal they are scheduled for June 9.
