The government intends to tighten sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho said this Wednesday.
The European Commission’s next round of sanctions is expected to propose restrictions on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time, including a ban on intra-EU transshipment, according to a document seen by Reuters.
This measure will not directly prevent the import of Russian LNG into the bloc, but will prohibit the provision of transshipment services by EU facilities for transshipment of Russian LNG to third countries.
“In general, the Portuguese government supports the European Union’s energy policy, especially measures aimed at ensuring our strategic sovereignty… just as it advocates tightening sanctions” to pressure Russia to end the invasion. This is stated in the statement of the minister sent to Reuters.
