The Communications Regulator (ERC) says journalism is facing one of the most critical moments in its history and argues that updating legal tools and adapting press law must be a priority.
Carla Martins, a member of the ERC Regulatory Council, suggests the sector faces “great challenges and challenges”, adding that “technology evolution is accelerating” and that media are adapting to the “digital paradigm” at different speeds.
He also believes the government has a “crucial role” in advocating a “balanced” funding model, given that traditional business models are insufficient due to the migration of advertising to digital media.
According to Carla Martins, attending the 33rd APDC Congress, which ends today in Lisbon, we are now experiencing a “new communications and information ecosystem” where digital platforms profit from journalistic content generated by media outlets.
The head of the ERC says that “the approach to regulation must be based on dialogue” and admits that “effective regulation with its back to the sector” is not possible, adding that the media “are a public good”.
