Government tweaks IRS, but avoids ‘economic fallacy’

In his debut in the biweekly debate, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said he was willing to “unite positions” and reach a “broad compromise” with the opposition over changes to the IRS, but refused to admit to an “economic mistake.” previous government. To this end, the PSD announced that it had made “negotiating efforts” and compared the third (between 11,623 and 16,472 euros) and fourth level (between 16,472 and 21,321 euros) with the proposals of PS and Chega, which favor a reduction of 22 % and 25% respectively.

PS Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos accused the executive of “disastrous speech” and called on Montenegro to carry out a “fairer redistribution” at the IRS. In Chega, Andre Ventura said he was “shocked” by the executive’s proposal to cut the IRS, which “doesn’t even pay for two cups of coffee”, receiving accusations from Montenegro that it is “more socialist than the socialists”. A government official promised changes “coming soon” to address immigration issues, as well as the launch of an “emergency health program” – one of the government’s priorities – in two weeks.
