PAN wants Aguiar-Branco to “recall” and clarify “unfortunate words”

PAN spokesperson Inés Souza Real said this Saturday that the President of the Assembly of the Republic must recant his “regrettable words” and ensure that “he is committed to human rights.”

This position was defended in statements to journalists on the sidelines of the PAN election program presentation, which took place at the Quinta das Pintoras in Lisbon, when asked whether José Pedro Aguiar-Branco should apologize after Friday’s parliamentary incident-fair.

“I think this reflection should be made by the President of the Assembly of the Republic to justify his words, which were probably unfortunate words, and that he, as President of this institution, is committed to human rights, integration, inclusion and society. which is open to different communities,” Ines Souza Real began with the answer.

During a parliamentary debate on Friday, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco refused to censor and restrict MPs’ freedom of speech after Chegi leader André Ventura questioned the ten years planned for the construction of the new airport, saying: “We can be much better than the Turks , Chinese, Albanians, we will have an airport in five years.”

Although she stressed that “one mistake does not give a mandate,” the PAN leader expressed hope that Aguiar-Branco will “refuse” and, moreover, that he is “unapologetic about this type of behavior that does not value inclusivity and dignity human personality and respect for all people.”

From the point of view of the PAN leader, freedom of expression “cannot be the yardstick for everything, it cannot be a hat into which forms of hostility or aggression can fit,” awaiting Aguiar-Branco’s explanation at the leadership conference on this topic, already requested by the PS.

“We call on the President (…) to speak out and clarify his position on these issues, because the country needs to have an Assembly of the Republic that is firmly committed to social and human rights in the country,” says Sousa Real.

On Friday, after the parliamentary incident, in statements to journalists, the President of the Assembly of the Republic said that it was not his responsibility to censor the positions or opinions of deputies, transferring possible criminal liability for parliamentary speeches to the prosecutor’s office. .
