From this Monday until October 31, the GNR is carrying out Operation Bom Caminho 2024, which aims to improve visibility patrols for the protection and safety of pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
In a statement, the National Republican Guard (NRG) explained that the operation is aimed at the protection and safety of pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela and traveling along the Portuguese Way, the Portuguese Way da Costa and the Portuguese Inland Route.
During Operation Bom Caminho 2024, the GNR will carry out a set of operational activities that will “promote a sense of safety and visibility among pilgrims along the different routes.”
The PNP adds that it will strengthen its presence “in areas most vulnerable to the passage of pilgrims, namely isolated and deserted areas, reception infrastructures and areas of high concentration, through special patrols and awareness-raising activities.”
In the statement, the guard advises pilgrims to prepare their route in advance, avoid detours, walk only during the day, wear light clothing and reflective materials, keep a mobile phone on battery and maintain daily contact with family and, if traveling by bicycle, use personal protective equipment and lighting.
It is also recommended that along the route, pilgrims walk on sidewalks or, in their absence, along roadsides, in groups, single file, do not use headphones along the way, and avoid carrying large quantities of things. money.
The GNR says that this operation will be carried out through the territorial commands of Porto, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu and that during periods of greater influx of pilgrims it will count on the cooperation of the Civil Guard.
