A 29-year-old man was in pre-trial detention for setting fire to a damaged door of a residential building on the island of Terceira in the Azores, the Public Security Police (PSP) said on Tuesday.
According to the PSP Azores Regional Command, the suspect approached the residence’s front door with a “barrel of gasoline and a box of matches,” causing a “fire” that was eventually extinguished “in a timely manner,” following a warning filed by the home owner with the police.
On the other hand, authorities were able to “intercept and detain” the man, who was “still close to the fire scene,” as described in a PSP statement sent to the newsroom.
Before fleeing the scene, the man “threatened the physical integrity of the residents,” he adds.
“A barrel of gasoline, a box of matches, a kitchen knife, and a dose of a narcotic drug (cocaine) were confiscated from the detainee,” the PSP regional command also explains, specifying that “the most serious coercive measure was used.” preventive detention”.
