Next week, in the Palacio de Belém, the President of the Republic will host the President of the Lisbon City Council, Carlos Moedas, for a hearing with the government on addressing the problem of homelessness.
“I will obviously receive the President of the Lisbon City Council next week to, in the presence of the government, as is natural, follow closely a topic that I have been following very closely and that is what the new government intends to do in this area. “, said Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
The head of state spoke with journalists on the sidelines of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Arpad Senes – Vieira da Silva Museum in Lisbon.
“Let’s see what will be done, how it will be done, by what means it will be done and at what time it will be done, because it is a race against time,” warned Marcelo Rebelo. de Souza.
The President recalled that the previous government, led by socialist António Costa, “eventually decided to extend for some time the strategy that came from the past.”
“The current government will decide what its strategy is: to expand last year’s strategy or change this strategy, that is, what the state will do, whether it will be the same or different in very sensitive areas such as housing support for the position of councils. , healthcare, employment – these are very important areas,” he listed.
Marcelo noted that Carlos Moedas was received in audience today by the Prime Minister of the SDS/CDU-PP minority government, Luis Montenegro, and that the mayor said he would meet on Friday with the ministers of the Presidential Administration and Social Security to find a joint solution to the problem of homelessness.
“This means that by next week there will probably be an idea of what the government’s position is overall on the homelessness strategy and, in particular, what to do in the most serious cases. Lisbon is a serious case, Porto is next. and there are others that are also a little heavier,” he said.
On Monday, the mayor of Lisbon asked the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister to hold hearings to jointly solve the problem of homelessness in the city, which has worsened after the Covid-19 pandemic.
