Carlos Moedas defends compensation for enhancing Humberto Delgado’s abilities

Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas argues that the municipality should be compensated for increasing temporary capacity at Humberto Delgado Airport and demands that the concessionaire “immediately minimize the impact of the operation” of the infrastructure.

In a proposal that the mayor of Lisbon will present this Wednesday afternoon at a public meeting of the municipality and to which Lusa had access, the Social Democrat proposes that the municipality request from the government “compensation through the Environmental Fund for a potential increase in the temporary capacity of the airport.”

In the document, Carlos Moedas also argues that the municipality should require the concessionaire, the French company Vinci, to “immediately minimize the consequences caused by maintaining the operation of Humberto Delgado Airport until the construction and commissioning of” the new infrastructure. in Campo de Tiro de Alcochete “through financial compensation and/or projects to minimize environmental impact.”

In a proposal entitled “New Airport – For demanding financial compensation and/or projects to minimize the environmental impact”, the mayor recalls the announcement made on May 14 by the Prime Minister, Social Democrat Luis Montenegro, about the construction of a new airport in the Lisbon region on Campo de Tipo de Alcochete, on the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI).

“Thanks to this quick, clear and well-reasoned decision, made after 32 days in office, which others took years to make, this strategic decision of national interest also implied the determination of the development of a work plan for the Humberto Delgado Airport,” recalls Carlos Moedas.

In the text, the mayor states that, unlike previous governments that decided, “although not announced”, the existence of 72 movements per hour, of which 48 in Portela and 24 “at the potential airport of Montijo”, the current leader “bet on its gradual reduction so that in 10 years there will actually be 0 (zero) movements per hour at Humberto Delgado Airport.”

“Recognizing that improving the operational capabilities of the current airport requires the investments mentioned above, this necessarily implies the creation of compensating financial measures that will mitigate the resulting consequences, protecting the interests of the population that makes up the city of Lisbon, especially in terms of noise and pollution,” states Moedas.

The Air Force Shooting Field, also known as the Alcochete Shooting Field (due to its proximity to this urban center), is mainly located in the district of Zamora Correia, in the municipality of Benavente (district of Santarem), with a small part in the parish of Caña, in the municipality of Montijo (district Setubal).

The municipality of Ribatejo in Benavente, with an area of about 521 square kilometers, lies on the border of the Santarém district with the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML).
