Pedro Nuno Santos accuses the right of hiding behind freedom of speech

This Wednesday, the Socialist General Secretary accused the right of hiding behind freedom of expression and refusing to “say no to racist statements,” assuring that the PS would fight “without truce” against racism, hatred and resentment.

In a video posted on the party’s social networks, PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos once again referred to the controversy that erupted last week involving the President of the Assembly of the Republic and Chega’s statement, expressing discomfort that Aguiar-Branco had not exercised the powers that he give rules to “warn a deputy when he makes a racist statement.”

“We don’t want a society of resentment or hatred, and that’s the big difference between us and the right, between the right that hides behind freedom of expression to not say no to racist statements,” he criticized.

At the opposite pole, according to Pedro Nuno Santos, are “the left, PS, defending freedom,” the freedom of people to be who they want, and “the right to respect others, respect their capabilities, respect women, respect everyone.”

“This is a fight for the socialists, which we will always wage without a truce, without hesitation. Let no one have any doubts. We will always say no to racism, hatred, hurt and division. For the unity of the Portuguese, for the unity of Portugal,” he assured.

According to the PS leader, the intervention that Aguiar-Branco should have made in Friday’s debate was not to prevent or punish Andre Ventura, “but rather to take advantage of what the rules already allow today for the President of the Assembly of the Republic, and this can not only be an example” in the conduct of parliamentary work, but also “be an example for the country.”

“This is a question, if we notice, that united all the rightists. SDP, IL, Chega, SDS. Everyone agreed, because behind this there is also a certain vision of society,” he accused.

According to Pedro Nuno Santos, the question that needs to be asked is whether we want this to be “a country in which crimes against others, discrimination and racism are easily accepted.”

“The PS will always tirelessly combat all forms of racism, all racist, homophobic and sexist speech. This is not the society we want,” he said.

The society that the leader of the Socialist Party wants is a society “that unites, not a society that divides.”

The President of the Assembly of the Republic said today at a conference of leaders that it is not his responsibility to evaluate the kindness of the speeches of deputies, even if they are ethically useless, considering himself the “guardian” of what is. acceptable.

This position of José Pedro Aguiar-Branco is contained in a document entitled “Freedom of Expression, Super-Freedom of Maximum Expression and Minimum Restrictions.” The problem arose after left-wing parliamentary benches criticized him for not reprimanding Chegi President Andre Ventura when he mentioned the Turkish people’s labor capabilities in plenary on Friday.
