The President of the Republic said this Wednesday that Portugal “very clearly” defends the “two peoples, two states” solution, but understands “in general” that now is “not the right time” to recognize Palestine. .
On the day that three European countries – Spain, Ireland and Norway – announced recognition of the State of Palestine on May 28, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, questioned in Rome on the issue, began by saying that “the position of Portugal is very clear” because ” Portugal has long defended, in accordance with the United Nations, the existence of two peoples and two states” and has taken several steps in this direction.
Marcelo recalled that “Portugal took a step at a certain point when it realized that Palestine should be associated in terms of status within the legal regime of the United Nations” and “has now taken another step when it realized that [a Palestina] must become a full member of the UN,” he noted during the May 10 vote at the UN General Assembly, which, in fact, was “overwhelming.”
