Santos Silva warns it would be unsettling to make the legislature dependent on European elections

The President of the Assembly of the Republic on Tuesday felt that it would be alarming to make the term of the legislature dependent on the results of the European elections. He said he understood the teachers’ protests, but criticized the “anarcho-union” model of the new unions.

These warnings were relayed by Augusto Santos Silva, Socialist MP, Elected Circle of Fora da Europa and former Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to the PS parliamentary group’s new ‘podcast’, which will debut on Tuesday.

Asked whether legislatures are increasingly dependent on the logic of electoral calendars, the President of the Assembly of the Republic rejected this and warned that it would be “a disturbing mistake not only to assume that the duration of the legislature depends on other elections – the so-called second-order elections , namely European ones, as well as the assumption that the duration of the legislature should depend on the evolution of the polls.

“That would be deeply anti-democratic. Everyone knows that within four years – and in this case four years followed by six years – there will be more or less favorable polls. in which the electorate can express distancing towards the government – an electorate that will later vote for the ruling party,” he said.

Augusto Santos Silva later added that “European elections serve to elect members of the European Parliament, local elections serve to elect those elected to municipalities, regional elections already this year in Madeira serve to elect the Legislative Assembly of this region.”

“Point”, stressed the former Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, arguing that the government “has all the necessary conditions to comply with the requirements of the law.”

“He has a majority in parliament, he has all the institutional cooperation with other sovereign bodies – the president of the republic and the parliament – he has a program that was most recently supported by the people, and therefore he has all the conditions. The government has a responsibility to take advantage of these unique conditions to implement its own agenda and respond to the challenges the country is facing,” he added.

Regarding the teachers’ strike, the former Minister of Education of the Second Executive, led by António Guterres, stressed that it is “right” and “absolutely normal in a democracy” for this professional class to express their dissatisfaction.

“The negotiation process is underway – and this deserves a second greeting from me, because in a democracy we not only listen to people, but also seek compromises with people. A negotiating process in which the government has presented very strong proposals to solve the difficulties that the unions point out,” he said.

Already in an indirect allusion to the STOP (Union of All Education Workers), the President of the Assembly of the Republic said that there are “trade unions sincerely involved in the negotiation process”, but there are also “forms of manipulating the strike”.

According to Augusto Santos Silva, there are “more recent unions that see themselves as a somewhat outdated model of anarcho-union”.

“I will not accept that one professional class should hand over a strike to another to get what it wants without that professional class going on strike. Seeking to fund another professional class to close schools, that doesn’t seem unacceptable to me.” he concluded.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic also criticized the “self-service” model of the strike.

“It also seems to me ethically unacceptable — I don’t know if it’s legal or not,” they will say in the Prosecutor General’s Office, “such a form of the so-called self-service strike. time and not one day entirely and without warning. The social struggle, which we socialists understand as one of the driving forces of democracy, has rules,” he defended.

In this conversation, the Chairman of the Assembly of the Republic rejected the thesis that he benefits Chege when he conducts direct debates with this political force.

“The one who criticizes, who fights, who stands in the way, is an accomplice?” he asked, alluding to the current SDP leadership.

However, regarding Chega, Augusto Santos Silva said that he prefers to have all political trends in parliament, even those that oppose democracy.
