Cega leader Andre Ventura said this Wednesday that he does not believe the statements of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) candidate in the European elections about the Nazi organization SS, but is not considering the possibility of changing the group.
“This question does not arise now,” he said, stressing that Chega is part of and maintains relations with “all his partners” in the Identity and Democracy group in the European Parliament, to which the AfD also belongs.
Andre Ventura, speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with the leadership of the Casa de Saúde de São João de Deus in Funchal as part of the campaign for Sunday’s regional elections, reacted to statements by Maximiliam Kra, which he considered “wrong” to claim that all members of the Schutzstaffel (SS, paramilitary organizations associated with the Nazi regime under Adolf Hitler during World War II) were “criminals”.
“I don’t believe the statements that have been made, I wouldn’t say so, but Chega is part of a political family that undoubtedly wants to change Europe in the fight against corruption, in the fight for secure borders and against immigration,” he said, and then reinforced: “I’m not going to agree 100% with what everyone says, but there’s not a single European band that does it.”
Regarding the possible change of the Chega group in Europe, Ventura reiterated that “that question does not arise now,” but acknowledged that there could be “closeness” between the Identity and Democracy group and the conservatives.
“At this moment Chega stands in solidarity with all its international partners,” he said, adding: “This does not mean that there cannot be an approach to winning elections at European level between the Conservatives and the ID, but it is a path that . Firstly , it depends not only on me.”
On the other hand, Andre Ventura stressed that he will continue to fight for the party’s victory in the European elections, pointing out that he has already informed the Italian, German and French leaders of the forces that make up Identity and Democracy that the war in Ukraine is a “fundamental issue” for Chegi.
“We are definitely on Ukraine’s side in this war,” he said, adding that the party stands for the preservation of the European project, but “with transformations,” as well as for the country’s permanence in NATO.
“If these axes are maintained, we will be in a good position to negotiate with other groups,” he said.
Meanwhile, the head of the list for the European elections of the far-right Alternative for Germany party said today that he is giving up political leadership and election activities after scandalous statements about the Nazi organization SS.
In a recent interview with Italian daily La Repubblica, Maximiliam Kra felt it was “wrong” to say that all members of the Schutzstaffel (SS, a paramilitary organization associated with the Nazi regime led by Adolf Hitler during World War II) were “criminals.” “.
The controversy caused by these statements meant that Kra announced through his law firm his decision to step down from the party leadership and refrain from participating in the election campaign.
“I will refrain from further participation in the election campaign with immediate effect and will resign as a member of the federal executive committee,” the politician said in a text published by German media today.
After Cra’s statements in the newspaper La Repubblica, the radical right parties National Union (France) Marine Le Pen and the League of Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini distanced themselves from the AfD.
In the current composition of the European Parliament, the AfD was part of the parliamentary group “Identity and Democracy”, which also included the RN and the League.
Elections to the European Parliament will take place from 6 to 9 June in the 27 member states of the European Union (EU).
